Jailbreaking
seems to be something most average iPhone users are afraid to
do. And if someone tells you "don't because it will mess up your phone" or "it's illegal," they're full of crap and probably don't know how to do it themselves, so they encourage others not to do it.
DON'T
BE AFRAID TO JAILBREAK! It is not the same as unlocking and its risk free and100% legal! Everything that works before jailbreaking continues to work after. Jailbreaking only adds features. Jailbreaking cannot void your warranty. If for any
reason you need to go back to factory settings and don't want it
jailbroken, simply do a restore. Jailbreak is gone. That simple. But,
if you have a jailbreak, and DO NOT want to lose it, don't upgrade
and don't restore! You will lose the jailbreak if you do. So now, if
you aren't already jailbroken, you're wondering, why? Well there are
thousands of apps, themes and tweaks in Cydia. There are currently over 10 MILLION Jailbroken iDevices! You can currently jailbreak iPhone 3, 3gs, 4 and 4S with firmware through 5.0.1, untethered. You can jailbreak firmwares 5.1 and 5.1.1 but it is tethered at the moment, meaning you would have to connect your iDevice to the computer to boot it if it dies or you restart the phone.
"Why
should I jailbreak my glorious device?" Because Apple's AppStore is too limiting.
These apps listed below are not possible to be in AppStore since they break one or more of Apple’s rules. These rules keep control of the iPhone platform in Apple’s control. Some of these rules include: patching system files such as SpringBoard, allowing apps to run in the background, running apps out of the “sandbox”, and simply doing things Apple decided that they don’t want you to do often for reasons to their benefit, not yours, such as tethering.

Why
should Androids be the only phones with a Pattern Lock? Well, they
don't! You can tweak your lock screen, and make it a pattern lock,
gravity lock (swipe up from bottom), invisible swipe, change the text on your
swipe bar, or tons of other options!

Reason #2: Customizable Desktop using Winterboard or Dreamboard
Everyone
likes customizing. Remember how you would change the Windows theme on
your PC or Laptop and thought you were God? Well, now you can do the
same on your iPhone! Winterboard and Dreamboard have tons of themes
that will suit your taste, or if you're crafty enough, build your
own! My favorite at the moment is in Dreamboard, and that is the Mac
OS X Lion Theme (Lion Ultimatum). Check it, ya dig?

Reason #3: Fast Toggles using SBSettings
I
almost want to bet that this will be "borrowed" and built
right into iOS 6. Any
takers? Well
this one is a favorite of mine. Fast toggles with SBSettings allow
you to turn on/off Wifi, 3g, Airplane mode, Bluetooth, Brightness,
Data, Location, and you can not only view Processes, but kill them as
well (how fun)! The "More" button will take you into
SBSettings, "Refresh" will refresh everything, "Dock"
allows you to add or remove apps, "Respring" will respring
or refresh your Springboard, and "Power" will power down
your iDevice. It also displays Wi-Fi IP Address (which I needed
desperately the other week to get my TV hooked up wirelessly to the
internet), Data IP address, Storage and Available Memory!

Reason #4: Backgrounder
Backgrounder
is really cool. Although Apple has integrated "Multitasking,"
it's still not true multitasking. The apps have to have the
capability to be a multitasking app, so if the creator of the app
didn't build that in, you're out of luck, until now! Youtube is a big
one that people want to run in the background, so they can listen to
a music video while facebooking, or whatever it is that cool kids do
these days. Running backgrounder, you can do that.

Reason #5: Tethering
Tethering.
This should probably be #1, but I'm lazy, and it's already #5. You
can tether your iPhone to any wireless device that uses bluetooth as
well, like a wi-fi only iPad. You can tether your iPhone to your
Macbook pro using the USB cord, or bluetooth. But having internet
anywhere you get a 3G signal without having to pay for the monthly
hotspot is awesome! Although remember, data charges may still apply,
so check to see how much you have used before trying it out, and I
don't recommend downloading big files while tethering!

Reason #6: Classic Gaming And Emulation
Pure
awesomeness. And maybe one of my weaknesses. Who doesn't miss playing
Earthworm Jim on Super Nintendo, or Mortal Kombat on Sega, or Mario
on classic Nintendo? If she doesn't, "she's too young for you,
bro." You can get virtually any game you own to your iPhone,
iPod, or, iPad. The really cool thing that with emulators like SNES
A.D.X. Plus, or GENESIS A.D. Plus, these geniuses figured out how to
hook up up to 4 Wiimotes to the iPhone, iPod, or, iPad through
bluetooth (uses BT Stack) to use as your gaming controller! How boss
is that?

Reason #7: Cydia
Again,
should be #1 since all the wonderful things are doable because of
Cydia, but we'll save the best for last! Cydia, created by Jay
Freeman (saurik), makes all possible on the glorious device. Cydia
is your jailbreak App store. Cydia has evolved since it was
first released, just as the iPhones have. They now have a "Featured"
section, which is really nice, and more intuitive than ever. Remember
back at #2 when I said you could download themes? Well, "Themes"
has it's own tab, right next to "Featured". Since I sleep
with my iPhone next to me every night, I'm waiting for the day it
will cook me breakfast...
